The roads in the Gambia are mainly hard sand and get cut up badly during the wet season. The main method of travel is by Bush Taxi. These are minibuses that run on regular routes for very little money. They are usually overcrowded and tend to stop at any point along the route to pick up or drop off passengers.
Hire cars are available but we do not recommend new visitors driving during their trip as the standard of driving is the worst that we have seen and accidents are commonplace. Many breakdowns are fixed where they happen, even in the middle of the road, especially if the vehicle is very large and cannot be pushed.
Tourist Taxis run from outside the hotels and can be recognised by their all over green paintwork. It is important to agree the price before taking the trip.
